The possibilities are endless when a group of people sit together and share openly and authentically. To many people’s surprise, empathy and support for one another comes naturally and quickly to us. We are built for bonding. Sitting with others, who are going through what you are going through, in all your similarities and differences, is potent medicine.
I like to turn the old adage “we need to love ourselves before anyone can love us” on its head. In contradiction to that idea, I see we finally learn to love ourselves, and find compassion for our suffering, by firstly experiencing those feelings for others. There is no greater teacher than that love in action. The empathy called from us when we witness another’s struggle is a deeply powerful experience. We heal through relating. Belonging and connection are the lasting remedies for shame and isolation.
I sometimes hold group circles that are process groups and sometimes I hold groups on specific topics. In 2020 See Support Program for Trauma Recovery.
